About

Hello. I am a lawyer and writer living in Nebraska. I write about a lot of things:

Essays and Book Reviews

My essays and book reviews have appeared in numerous publications—including, most recently, the Ploughshares Blog, The Colorado Review online, and Literal Magazine. My niche in reviewing is Spanish language books and Spanish language literature, especially not well-enough known or unfairly excluded or marginalized female Central and South American writers.

Fiction

My short stories have appeared in several publications, with one most recently in Hawai’i Pacific Review, Arts & Letters and Emerys Journal. My fiction ranges all over the place, but as my story “Brahms’ Lullaby” can attest, I love twisting historical fiction into something new. Because of my personal experience, I also write a lot about people with disabilities, especially intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Legal

By day, I serve as General Counsel for the Nebraska Public Service Commission. I’ve been a practicing lawyer in Nebraska for more than 15 years. Previously, I worked as the Director of Procurement and Grants for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. For five years I was also an attorney for the Department. I started my career as an Assistant Attorney General at the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. I’ve done a little bit of everything in government legal work—contracts, grants, trials, administrative hearings, and appellate practice.

Procurement and Grants

I also do some on the consulting work with Civic Initiatives, LLC, a consulting firm that provides expert support for government agencies and other entities in procurement and grants.
